It might come as a surprise, but you don’t need to have a degree in political science to work in the federal government. In fact, there are tons of federal careers open to medical professionals, engineers, physicists, computer scientists, and skilled labor. This is especially true for those with a background in business, economics, and accounting! The federal government relies upon having a diverse and highly skilled workforce to get the job done on behalf of the American public.
I recently had a chance to speak about this very topic with students from The Catholic University of America Busch School of Business. The discussion was enriching and helpful for any business majors that might be considering a federal career.
Check out our exchange and I hope you find it as helpful as I did. Special thanks to my fellow panelists Dan Curtin of the recruiting firm Parker + Lynch, Myisha Kinsey of the Defense Intelligence Agency, and the folks at the Busch School of Business for a great discussion!
I’ve included a list of agencies below to help you get started on your federal job search. These agencies in particular have a need for professionals with business skills:
The Federal Reserve
Department of the Treasury
Department of Commerce
Securities and Exchange Commission
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
Department of Defense
Good luck and let me know if you have any questions, feedback, or comments! Talk soon.
